Project Eye-To-Eye's Summer Program
Camp Vision works to improve the self-esteem of our campers, ages 10-14, through a mentoring relationship with our counselors who also have learning disabilities and/or ADHD. Further, art empowerment and independent learning projects help campers gain self-advocacy skills and a sense of community that is imperative to success both in and outside of the classroom.
Activities at Camp Vision
All activities at Camp Vision are geared towards helping students with language based learning disabilities (LD) and ADHD realize the abilities that they already possess in order to put them to use inside the classroom. Each day from 8:30 am check-in to 4 pm pick-up campers will work closely with their counselors and other campers on various activities.
Artwork at Camp Vision is part of an art empowerment curriculum designed by professional artists specifically for the use of our program. Campers will work alongside our counselors, all of whom are successful local college students who also have LD and ADHD, to create art projects with school related themes. These projects and mentoring relationships help students gain knowledge about their learning disabilities, which allows them the ability to better advocate for their needs in the classroom.
Sports and games including but not limited to kickball, softball, capture the flag, and flag football will allow students the opportunity to work as a team to reach a common goal. Additionally, such sports allow campers the time to let loose and enjoy their summer through physical activity.
Team Building Activities are an integral part of Camp Vision. In order to be successful in the classroom, students need a peer-support system to help them find strategies to overcome difficulties in and outside of school. At camp, amongst like-minded people and learners, campers will feel at ease to discover their learning disabilities are not a hindrance, but a positive part of their identity.
Academic “work” will include each camper’s EmpowerPoint presentation. These EmpowerPoints are designed to help students bring their own voice to Individual Education Plan meetings by allowing students to establish goals for their own education. After creating a unique, personalized presentation about their learning style and needs in the classroom, campers will have their very own copy to update as they progress through school. Those campers who have completed an EmpowerPoint during previous years at Camp Vision will work collaboratively on a project which will explore the many opportunities that will be presented to them as future college students.
Counselors at Camp Vision are all mentors from local colleges who have been trained through Project Eye-to-Eye’s interactive workshops, and have worked with their own learning disabilities in order to find academic success. Project-Eye-To-Eye, a nation-wide program that partners with local communities, public and private schools, universities, and local businesses to bring labeled adults with learning disabilities into the lives of labeled younger students with LD and ADHD in order to empower these students and help them find success.
