Family Empowerment Model
Project Eye-To-Eye facilitates and supports the development of local, grassroots Eye-To-Eye family organizing work-groups. These groups are led by volunteer parent coordinator(s) whose responsibilities are to reach out to other parents and facilitate monthly meetings. Project Eye-To-Eye parent and family groups are issues-based and action-oriented, and serve as a strong catalyst for improving family involvement with and ownership of their child's education. Families of students with learning disabilities are often isolated from each other, uninformed of their legal rights, and often feel disempowered. To address this disempowerment, Project Eye-To-Eye has created a Family Empowerment Resource Guide providing families with concrete learning strategies, contact information for local LD/ADHD advocacy organizations, and clear information regarding the basic rights of students with learning disabilities in both public and private school settings. This guide is distributed to all Project Eye-To-Eye families and community stakeholders. Understanding Your Child through New Eyes Project Eye-To-Eye uses the term "learning disabled" only as it applies to the disabilities rights movement. Project Eye-To-Eye believes in the philosophy of the Disabilities Rights Movement (DRM) that sees disability as a social construct, not an objective medical condition. This is important to consider when beginning to lead your child on the path to personal empowerment. The Family Empowerment Model is based on four key elements for success: Key Element to Success #1: Self-Esteem - Nurturing hope and vision for tomorrow |

A key component of our work toward our mission is supporting the families of Project Eye-To-Eye students. At Project Eye-To-Eye, we celebrate difference and work to create a community of learners geared to be agents of change in the way society views individuals with learning disabilities. With that said, we know family members may be thinking even at this very moment, "How is my child going to succeed in school or in life?" Project Eye-To-Eye is committed to empowering young students who have labeled learning disabilities and their families in order to help their child to succeed in life.
