HOW TO START A CHAPTER

Typically, there are three components that must be in place before Project Eye-To-Eye can start a site.

  1. Contact within a College or High School - Typically, this is a contact person at a local college or high school who is willing to sponsor a Project Eye-To-Eye site. This contact could be a person affiliated with the school's disability service program, a teacher or faculty member, or other school administrator who is willing to sponsor the site and help Project Eye-To-Eye recruit mentors and chapter coordinators. Chapter coordinators are students who will take a leadership role in creating and implementing Project Eye-To-Eye programs in their school, and who are responsible for running the day-to-day operation of their chapter.

  2. Contact within a Community School - Usually, this is an individual associated with a local private or public elementary, middle school, or high school, preferably near the college, who can help connect Project Eye-To-Eye to labeled students in the school to mentor.

  3. Agreement to Following the Project Eye-To-Eye Program Model

Principle 1: Mentoring and Hope: Give younger students with learning disabilities hope by bringing mentors into their lives who can model success and empower students to imagine a positive future for themselves.

Principle 2: Asset Based Academic Empowerment: Mentors provide their mentees with skills that facilitate academic empowerment.

Principle 3: Beyond Normal Art Club: Empower students to develop their strengths and validate their unique gifts through art, which are too often ignored within traditional educational paradigms.

Principle 4: Family Networking and Empowerment: Families of labeled students are often isolated from each other, uninformed of their legal rights, and disempowered by institutions of education. Project Eye-To-Eye seeks to connect these families and support the development of a powerful coalition that shares information and advocates on behalf of labeled children in their respective communities.

Principle 5: Professional Development: All Project Eye-To-Eye members are provided training on LD/ADHD issues, art pedagogy, community development, and working with children.
